PANDEMIC STOCKPILING
This page has been protected from robot content scraping. If you wish to copy content for your personal use please subscribe.
There is no doubt that when the Bird Flu pandemic strikes mass panic will lead to frenzy shopping of provisions and chronic shortages of critical preparedness supplies. This is human nature and is evident in any emergency.
Generally shops do not stock provisions for more than a few days, rents do not allow for such a luxury, so even when people stock up for only a day or two, late comers are already faced with empty shop shelves and no promise for replenishment for some time to come.
The same is true for any supplies, particularly preparedness provisions which are sought after in times of emergency and disruption.
The threat of the influenza pandemic, the media coverage and Government prompting has led to a number of businesses and individuals already stockpiling provisions and equipment.
We have listed below the items we think businesses should stockpile ahead of the initial wave of panic buying. Ensure you stock up with enough of these items to last until suppliers can replenish their stocks, allowing for 6 to 8 weeks from the initial wave.
If your business has not done so already, consider stockpiling your own adequate preparedness supplies of:
Disposable face masks will become common place during the influenza pandemic as they were in Asian cities during SARS.
Do NOT buy cheap face masks as they will do very little to protect the wearer or protect persons from the wearer if the wearer is infected.
We recommend the Alpha Pro Tech N-95 Particulate Respirator for its comfort, filtration efficiency of greater than 99.98% at 0.1 micron, and its one-size-fits-all design.
You will need to offer all visitors a fresh face-mask at the office entrance area, as well as staff who feel sick, and if there is a need to go to crowded places or face-to-face meetings.
People with respiratory infection symptoms should use a disposable face mask at all times to help prevent exposing others to their respiratory secretions.
Any face mask must be disposed of as soon as it becomes moist or after any cough or sneeze, in a sealed bag and into an appropriate waste receptacle. Hands must be thoroughly washed and dried after the used mask has been discarded.
Face masks will need to be changed frequently to be effective so expect on the outset of the pandemic for each employee to wear several per day. This may settle down after a week or two.
You will need to order enough masks to cater for staff, visitors, heavy goods delivery personnel and for staff to take some home with them for their commute to/from work, and some for their families members.
To calculate your initial order requirement we recommend you order 5 masks per staff per day for 30 days. For example if your business has 20 employees, your order requirements will be:
20 staff x 5 per day x 30 days = 3,000 masks.
Larger organizations of 100 or more staff could reduce this requirement to 3 masks per staff per day.
This may seem like overdoing it, but face masks are likely to be out of stock from suppliers for several weeks at least once the pandemic takes hold and other businesses are panic buying.
Once usage has settled down you can monitor attrition and adjust your replenishment requirements accordingly.
If you wish to purchase your face masks now you can do it from here. They ship worldwide and have plenty of stock. They also do a special for large orders. Otherwise retain this email for when you are ready, but don't wait too long.
Tamiflu has shown to be effective against influenza provided it is taken within 2 days of the onset of symptoms. It is the drug of choice in case of an outbreak of bird flu and has been stockpiled by governments in readiness for the possibility of an influenza pandemic.
However governments will as priority give their supplies to health workers, and there are no guarantees that there will be enough to go round to the public at large.
Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) is used to treat some types of influenza (flu) in patients who have had symptoms of the flu for 2 days or less. Tamiflu is in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. These drugs work by stopping the growth and spread of the flu virus in your body. Tamiflu helps shorten the time you have flu symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, fever, and chills.
We recommend you buy enough for a course of tablets for each of your employees.
We have seen boxes of 10 (75mg) tablets on sale for as much as US$330 (see here), however we have negotiated a source for our readers to buy the same for US$114. To purchase through our supplier please click here.
Hand antiseptics and alcohol gels have proven to be very effective against combating the spread of Bird Flu, so have plenty of alcohol gel dispensers around, not just in bathrooms but also waiting rooms and office desks.
All staff and visitors should be encouraged to rinse their hands with hand antiseptic frequently and after touching any surfaces.
We recommend Vira-Block as an Extra Strength Hand Antiseptic that effectively kills 99.99% of hand transmitted germs that may cause illness. You can purchase individual or larger quantities of Vira-Block from here.
Alcohol wipes similar to gels, wipes should be in abundance around the office and made freely available for wiping surfaces frequently.
Purchase your stock of alcohol wipes from here
Rubber gloves for cleaning and disinfecting suspect surfaces. Dispose of rubber gloves after use.
Purchase your stock of Rubber Gloves from here
Disinfecting hand soaps should be made available in all washrooms to be used in place of regular hand soaps.
Disinfecting sprays are useful for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and the surrounding air.
Purchase your stock of Disinfecting Sprays from here
Cleaning materials are useful for when workstations need to be disinfected and cleaning contractors are unable to attend due to their own staffing problems.
Thermometers for measuring temperature of those at work and all persons entering the office from all entrances.
Purchase your stock of Thermometers from here
You should ensure all staff have thermometers at home so they can check and record their own temperatures before coming to work.
Tissues - place boxes of tissues around in all waiting areas and desks.
Purchase your stock of Tissues from here
Surgical (thin rubber-latex) gloves - at the height of the pandemic some may opt to maintain a barrier between their hands and any surfaces that may need to be touched (such as lift buttons, door knobs etc.).
Purchase your stock of Surgical (latex) gloves from here
If employees need to travel to infected areas for whatever reason, assemble a travel health care kit containing basic first aid and medical supplies. Be sure to include a thermometer, face masks and alcohol-based hand gel for hand hygiene.
Purchase your stock of Emergency Travel Kits here
They may also provide useful protection for people such as front-counter staff or public transport drivers, whose duties require them to have frequent face-to-face contact with members of the public where social distancing is either not possible or not practical.
Retail outlets should also consider this type of fixture to separate retail staff from customers.
Plan for not having access to critical supplies for at least six weeks.
Should you feel the need to stock any medical provisions, please consult a medical practitioner for advice on what to stock and correct usage.
